A Day of Nature and Discovery from Ponta Delgada
Our stop in Ponta Delgada, the charming capital of São Miguel in the Azores perfect blend of natural beauty, local culture, and geothermal wonder. Known as the “Green Island,” São Miguel lives up to its name — with lush volcanic landscapes, steaming fumaroles, and breathtaking viewpoints. Our full-day excursion was a journey into the heart of the island.

Ribeira Grande & Santa Iria: A Glimpse into Island Life
We began by heading north along the scenic coastal road to the historic town of Ribeira Grande. This quaint settlement, with its basalt churches, traditional architecture, and peaceful streets, gave us a brief but authentic taste of local life on the island. It felt like stepping back in time, far removed from the bustle of modern tourism.
From there, we continued to the Santa Iria Belvedere, one of São Miguel’s most iconic viewpoints. Standing high above the cliffs, we were treated to panoramic views of the rugged north coast, where green fields meet the dramatic Atlantic Ocean. It’s a place that invites both awe and reflection.

The Furnas Valley: Steam, Silence, and Subtropical Splendor
Our journey then led inland to one of the Azores’ most extraordinary places: the Furnas Valley. From the Pico do Ferro viewpoint, the scene below was breathtaking — the Furnas Lake mirrored the sky, surrounded by green slopes and patches of geothermal activity. It’s here that the power of nature reveals itself most vividly.
Descending into the valley, we visited the renowned Terra Nostra Park, a botanical garden established in the 18th century. Walking among giant ferns, exotic trees, and blooming subtropical plants felt like stepping into a living museum of nature. At the heart of the park lies a large thermal pool, rich in iron and minerals — its ochre-colored waters inviting, even if unusual.
After a relaxing lunch, our exploration of the hot springs and fumaroles began — clouds of steam rising from the ground, bubbling mud pools, and the scent of sulfur in the air. This geothermal activity is not only a spectacle but also a vital part of local tradition, as it’s used to cook the famous “Cozido das Furnas,” a stew slow-cooked underground.

A Taste of the Island: Ananas Plantation
Before returning to Ponta Delgada, we made a final stop at a local pineapple plantation. Azorean pineapples are cultivated in greenhouses and are smaller, sweeter, and more aromatic than their tropical counterparts. Learning about the traditional growing methods and tasting the fruit made for a delightful end to our island journey.

Ponta Delgada: Gateway to the Azores
While the city of Ponta Delgada itself offers charming streets, baroque churches, and a lively harbor, it is truly the natural wonders of São Miguel that define the experience here. From volcanic valleys and thermal waters to ocean vistas and fertile plantations, the island is a celebration of elemental beauty.
