Our stop in Ponta Delgada, the charming capital of São Miguel in the Azores perfect blend of natural beauty, local culture, and geothermal wonder. Known as the “Green Island,” São Miguel lives up to its name — with lush volcanic landscapes, steaming fumaroles, and breathtaking viewpoints. Our full-day excursion was a journey into the heart of the island.
Ribeira Grande & Santa Iria: A Glimpse into Island Life
We began by heading north along the scenic coastal road to the historic town of Ribeira Grande. This quaint settlement, with its basalt churches, traditional architecture, and peaceful streets, gave us a brief but authentic taste of local life on the island. It felt like stepping back in time, far removed from the bustle of modern tourism.
From there, we continued to the Santa Iria Belvedere, one of São Miguel’s most iconic viewpoints. Standing high above the cliffs, we were treated to panoramic views of the rugged north coast, where green fields meet the dramatic Atlantic Ocean. It’s a place that invites both awe and reflection.
